To improve bicycle acceleration and cornering speed for street riding, especially with front suspended bikes, the front tire can be lighter. But the wider rear tire, and equal sized rims, causes a squirrelliness in the rear when diving into turns. In cross section view, the tire rolls laterally under the rim. Sports car racers call this yaw. A wide rear rim allows the tire section to widen, reducing this rollover. Strengthening cornering.
