The experiment here was to keep the entire machine, but especially to keep the drivetrain minimalized.
The hypothesis here was that a lighter weight would provide quicker acceleration.
We ran a super compact 12 tooth Dura-Ace cog with a 34 tooth chainring; resulting in a shorter chain, reducing a detectable amount of extra steel.
The results of the testing include that the minimalized fixed gear drivetrain reduces overall bicycle weight noticeably. However, the effect of reduced rotational weight in the drivetrain, because of relatively low centrifugal speed, produced only minor benefits to acceleration; super light pedals and shoes would have a bigger effect on acceleration.
Possible downside could be increased chain wear rate; but this does produce a lighter bike.
